Day 34

It’s Memorial Day and the only thing we can think of doing is finding a place that at least offers cable so we can watch basketball tonight. We lucked out big time, however, when we found “the most luxurious RV campground in the US.” This morning we had simply gotten up after a long night driving, ate breakfast on Denny’s and drove north using the Pacific Coast Highway, which is one of the more scenic drives you can find in California. This highway allowed us to drive right alongside the coast, passing through every beach city that sits on the surf. We settled in Newport Beach where we found an RV campground with every single amenity that we couldn’t find elsewhere.

This campground has full electrical, sewer, and cable hookup. Along with this comes wi-fi internet access, swimming pool, hot tub, and a manmade lake and beach. In the middle of the lake which gets its water from the salty Pacific, are huge blowup activities, including rock climbing, a trampoline, and a see-saw. All of these were huge and Kevin had a blast climbing up the largest one. When two workers in kayaks paddled up like crazy towards Kevin when he had started up, Kevin was already 3/4 of the way up and the workers were screaming for him to come down. It was campground policy to wear a life vest when using all of their water activities, so Kevin jumped the 10 feet back in the water dejected because he wasn’t allowed to climb up to the top. None of us wanted to wear a bulky life-jacket, especially since we were all very good swimmers, so we resigned ourselves to taking out the Frisbee and making up different games to play in the water. Lifejacket-policy aside, we had a blast playing games, wrestling, and swallowing salt water. We hit the pool and hot tub and spent another few hours soaking and swimming there, trying to get rid of all of the aches and sores we’ve accumulated over the last few weeks.

By the time our fingers turned into raisins, we had enough of the water and headed back into the RV where we cooked dinner and worked on all the things we needed to do for the website. The Lakers advanced to the finals, and much to our surprise, we were actually able to see it for ourselves on TV! Cable is something that I will never, ever take for granted again.

The first third of our trip has come and gone, and since we passed the 31-day milestone, we have all thought about the many things we have seen and done in the last month. One of the things we realized was that many of the people we’ve met on the tour have asked us the exact same question. They want to know what it’s like constantly being on the road, moving from place to place non-stop. They always ask this with an “eww” expression on their face, not being able to imagine what it’s like spending three full months on top of asphalt. Since I get asked that so many times, I figure many of you reading this at school, work, or home have been thinking the same thing. To answer that question, I only need one word. Tiring. It’s harder now to put on a happy smile every time we meet new people when we had three hours of sleep, four days of McDonald’s, and 13 of the last 15 hours on the road. Not to mention how sore we are from spending so much time sitting inside the RV.
