Day 68 to 70

The last few days have been a holiday for us just like any other. Everyone loves a good cook out and fireworks on the 4th of July and we are no exception to the rule. After touring the Nebraska School for the Deaf, we still had no idea what our plans were going to be for the fourth. We had thought about the possibility of going up to Minnesota where there was a large Deaf camp out, but we found that the campground was filled so there was no way we could go up there. We heard about a large gathering at Camp Lakodia in Madison, South Dakota too, but we couldn’t find enough details for us to actually want to drive the three hours to get there. The Mary Augusta was sitting and gathering dust in Des Moines, Iowa before we got an invitation in Lincoln, Nebraska for an old-fashioned backyard cook out with one twist: $500 worth of illegal fireworks bought in nearby Missouri.

Amy Willman teaches ASL and linguistics at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and every year loves inviting people over to play around with fireworks. This year, she and her brother decided to go all out and bought as many fireworks as they could get their hands on. We dined on bratwurst and before we knew it, we spent the next five hours lighting firework after firework, and truly enjoying the show as well as chatting with the 10 or so people who went. Some of the shells that were supposed to explode in the air ended up exploding on the ground, giving us all a couple scares that were as thrilling as it was dangerous. By one in the morning, we had run out of fireworks, but I had already been long asleep at midnight in the RV. We drove the 1/2 mile to the RV park where we were extremely lucky to get the last spot in the entire park and camped out there for the night. The next day we went straight for Kansas City where for two days, we did nothing but work in our RV, catch up on movies, and dine on s’mores.

I’m happy to say that we have followed through on the pledge that we made at Campvention to make more fires on the trip, because we make them on a regular basis now. They’re great at keeping the mosquitoes away!
