This will be an unique story about a deaf man who has done pretty much everything, about his business partner who is an associate, who served as a true mentor and who is one of America’s finest deaf businessmen and financial advisers.
His name is Joshua R. Beal, his first love was soccer, and now his world is getting others started with their own businesses and investing wisely in building their future with solid retirement planning.
He also has a several mentors that he looks up to, one of whom is his father naturally, who came home from work always dressed in a suit and tie, he was a businessman always carrying his briefcase.
The second mentor was Dr. Hugh Prickett, who was his first interpreter, himself a former Superintendent of the Deaf school in Arkansas, a CODA.
“I learned a lot from him everything about the deaf community and felt a kinship with him since he was very insightful on what is like to be a deaf person seeking ones’ identity as a professional,” said Beal.
The third mentor and one that became his managing partner is Louis Schwarz, who was very influential in his career and who had a good eye for talent and business etiquette.
Schwarz said, “I found that many of our deaf clients preferred working with us because of the frustrations they experienced communicating with other financial professionals.”

Mr. Beal fit exactly the bill as his motivation and drive nicely complemented the Schwarz Financial Services, LLC effectively bolstering the firm reputation by adding to what Schwarz has been offering since he founded the the Income Tax Service for the Deaf in 1971 as a side job.
“With his addition in my firm, he had contributed many opportunities in order to expand our business and to improve the client-oriented services,” said Schwarz.
“Because of his genuine desire and value in my firm for past years, he was invited to become a partner at the beginning of this year (of 2009).”
With both managing $20 million of their clientele’s money together now, the two now mentor assistants who provide financial services for their firm, they have three investment advisers with the fourth, the newest addition currently studying for the licensing exam, all of whom are deaf.
“Schwarz is the “Father” of financial services for the Deaf in America,” Beal stated, “What he has done is broken down many barriers to the financial mainstream for deaf people.”
As a result, many deaf people who are professionals are now working as advisers, tax preparers, accountants, and book-keepers.

“I think my success stems from the launch of DeafTax.com in 2006, which is our new subsidiary firm, and the roll-out of the DeafTax VITA Pilot which started in 2009,” volunteered Beal, “over the past four years, I worked to implement continued improvements in the investment advisory services we offer our clients through well-designed strategic planning.”
Pointed out Beal, “Schwarz Financial Services LLC is well-positioned to continue into the next generation in our commitment to becoming the premier deaf-owned financial services firm in the country.”
They expect to provide VITA services to low-income and deaf taxpayers in 100 U.S. cities within several years.
They will grow from 5 cities in 2009 to 10 cities in 2010, in an effort to “empower deaf taxpayers who have not been able to access these services due to communication barriers that still exist today,” as Beal puts it.
With the economic jargon aside, Beal has other interests besides being a strategic planner, he was in Honolulu, Hawaii recently competing in the World Deaf Surfing Championship (WDSC), the first ever of its kind, in the Shortboard and Longboard divisions.
Beal took 2nd place in the Senior Master Shortboard Division, riding the waves as if the friendly dolphins were around to help him, he surfed harmoniously with the Hawaiian waters and some Aloha spirit.
He is not only one of the competing surfers but was elected recently as Chairman of the International Deaf Surfing Association in addition to being elected as Vice Chairman for the U.S. Deaf Surfing Association.
He grew up as a surfer, starting at 12 years old surfing at the prime surfing spots in both Hawaii and California.
What motivates him?
“I have a chip on my shoulder, it started when I was mainstreaming as a young boy at Hidden Valley Elementary School being forced to ride with severely disabled children,” Beals mused, “from then I was determined to participate with the hearing kids and also constantly badgered my parents to permit me to transfer schools in the 3rd grade.”
In fact, when he was selected to the elite traveling squad to play soccer which he excelled in, the Santa Rosa United, his hearing teammates made fun of him until he decided to quit.
That was when he ultimately fell in love with surfing when he relocated to Hawaii with his family.
“Sports gave me confidence that I could apply myself, work hard, and become skilled at whatever I set my mind to,” a determined Beal said, “it also gave me a taste of discrimination and inequity for deaf people, so I resolved to always do things on my own terms and to never allow others to discourage me from my goals and ambitions.”
However he says, “My dreams revolved around achieving a high quality of life and being a family man.”
Living his dream, he is a father of four children, two stepsons and two children with his wonderful wife Marylou, who is hard of hearing with two deaf sisters herself.
Beal can cruise in his surf nearly as well as well as doing a numbers crunch for his clients.
