Question of the Week:

Why is it that we seem incapable of having successful Deaf “big men” in basketball?

I went to a Gallaudet University basketball game recently, and watched the Bisons fight to yet another valorous but bitter loss against a conference rival. As it is usually so at the Field House the lack of quality big men (size) doomed us against the hearing team. This is not isolated to the Bisons; everywhere we go, Deaf teams struggle against hearing teams because of this glaring weakness. So the question must be put forward: what reason is there for us not having any good big men succeeding on the court, or at least even having a surplus of big men on various rosters everywhere? Is it physical? Genetics? A community quirk? We have loads of talented guards and forwards, but it is rare for us to see talented centers dominate games like Shaquille O’Neal or Tim Duncan.

Why are we incapable of having successful Deaf “big men” in basketball? Please give your reasons below in the comments, and let’s have a good debate on this!

To answer to this question. deaf community is so small. High schools around here have about 2-5 thousands students per school. It like if you stand on the beach and pick up sand on your finger compare to the whole beach. IF IF IF a city such like Chicago have all deaf people. I am talking about about 2 million people then you would finally find few deaf with unbelievable talent but still there other 300 million hearing here in the USA. OK OK 300 people here in the USA. 150 million are deaf then we will easy find many talent deaf athletes. Hey there is more STINK hearing athletes than deaf why? cuz they hearing are bigger world so you have better chance to find more stink hearing athletes than deaf TRUE !!! by the way I don’t mean to put deaf athletes down. I went to deaf school for many years then went to hearing school for one year. I witnessed hearing athletics work their butt off. I mean work HARD and put effort and hours in the weight room while deaf athletes at deaf school don’t put that kind of effort like them. and Deaf tend to play three sports at deaf school while hearing play 1-2 sports and use more time to work one sport that make BIG difference !

I completely second what Joe said and would like to add that the better deaf players prefer to play for hearing schools which offer better opportunities.

nba is top of the world about 20 nba teams are best players out of population in the world I can’t count how many people in the world. that same thing with Deaf group are 1 out of 20 is best player in individual sports I couldn’t explain how the conception. I m sure in this states has about 3 millions deaf.. possibly 1 out of 3 million can play for nba..
