Day 41
Posted on: June 7, 2004Jed was filled with energy after saying goodbye to Kevin last night that he had driven all the way to Sacramento. Branic and I had long since slept before we had even arrived and had a comfortable sleep. Jed parked outside of a free standing Starbucks for the night so that we could have Wi-Fi [...]
Day 40
Posted on: June 6, 2004Jed and I awoke unbelievably sore. While my body simply creaked getting out of bed, Jed’s wouldn’t cooperate with him at all for a while before he finally could get up. He looked funny walking around like somebody’s grandpa. We just had a short drive to San Leandro to the DeafHope house where a fundraiser [...]
Day 39
Posted on: June 5, 2004I woke up this morning excited as hell that we were going to spend the day playing paintball, and nothing else. I stepped outside the RV and for the first time, really got a look at where we were. Last night, I wasn’t able to see a single thing since it was so dark and [...]
Day 38
Posted on: June 4, 2004Today is graduation day at CSD Fremont and 47 seniors are graduating and moving on to other things. A total of 40 of them are going on to post-high school education such as college, community college, technical schools, and certification programs. The remaining 7 are joining the work force upon graduation.
The graduation speaker was [...]
Day 37
Posted on: June 3, 2004We arrived at the California School for the Deaf in Fremont, California for a tour on the very last day of classes. It was somewhat of a mistake for us to expect a very good tour when all the kids are running around going to the elementary and middle school graduations, and all the high [...]
Day 36
Posted on: June 2, 2004When Jed said that we were stopping in Visalia, California, Kevin, Branic, and I all thought, “Why?” We had never heard of the town before, much less understand why we were stopping there. We found out that in the tiny town, we were going to meet with Richard Bean, the first and only Deaf volunteer [...]
Day 35
Posted on: June 1, 2004The oil change light started blinking the other day, and Jed was really concerned about this. We would hate to ignore this light, drive another 15,000 miles and have it fall apart 50 miles from Omaha, 1,000 miles from anywhere else. We wanted to get it checked out as soon as we could, and today [...]
Day 34
Posted on: May 31, 2004It’s Memorial Day and the only thing we can think of doing is finding a place that at least offers cable so we can watch basketball tonight. We lucked out big time, however, when we found “the most luxurious RV campground in the US.” This morning we had simply gotten up after a long night [...]
Day 33
Posted on: May 30, 2004We again woke up at an unholy hour, getting up at 5:30 and getting ready for another day at the bowling alley. Since Branic and I had no valid reason for being awake so early as opposed to Jed and Kevin who both needed to bowl, we slept comfortably in our beds in the parking [...]
Day 31 & 32
Posted on: May 29, 2004The PCDBA bowling tournament officially starts today, and since Jed is not planning on bowling in the singles and doubles tournament, we are stayed at the KOA campground to swim and take advantage of the Wi-Fi internet accessibility. It was a long day of writing articles and editing video for all of us, and later [...]
Day 28 & 29
Posted on: May 29, 2004Today I slept in until 11 for one of the rarer times on my summer break, which is actually a surprise considering I sleep in past 11 on many occasions during school. Kevin slept again at his mother’s home and Jed slept inside his parents’ home again. Despite their open invitation, Branic and I still [...]
Day 30
Posted on: May 27, 2004We pulled up to a large, new office building tucked away in the middle of a classy office park in San Diego at 10 a.m. Surrounded by beautiful landscaping, a 20,000 square foot building is the home of DawnSignPress, a publishing company that publishes Deaf related books and DVDs, specializing in educational material. The owner [...]
Day 27
Posted on: May 24, 2004Linda Raymond, director of the mainstream program for the Clark County School District, annually hosts an all-morning “transition workshop” for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing students that attend her district. More than 200 students from the 6th to 12th grade went to this workshop which will help them learn more about life outside of school and [...]
Day 26
Posted on: May 23, 2004Since Kevin had driven late into the night and Jed had awoken early in the morning feeling fresh, Jed decided to go ahead and take the wheel and finish out the drive to Las Vegas. Kevin, for the first time, was able to sleep in back on the bed while somebody stayed awake and drove! [...]
Day 25
Posted on: May 22, 2004Today, Rima and Rae Ortega were generous enough to host a pool party at their apartment pool complex which even had a hot tub. More than 50 Tucson-ers came to enjoy a cook out, play in the pool, and chat with each other. I learned that the Tucson Deaf community very often holds gatherings, and [...]
Day 24
Posted on: May 21, 2004We were greeted by Jed and Kevin’s old classmate from Fremont, Roger Vass, at the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind in Tucson. He works in ASDB’s media department, teaching a TV productions class in addition to being responsible for all of the school’s media technology. Roger told us that the ASDB was founded [...]
Day 23
Posted on: May 20, 2004We were scheduled to receive a tour at the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf and for all four of us, it was our first time visiting the school. The first thing I noticed about the school was that there was no large main building welcoming you to the front of the school. The campus, [...]
Day 22
Posted on: May 19, 2004We all lucked out with a free day when we turned a 7-hour drive to the Grand Canyon into a two hour one like described in yesterday’s journal. While Jed took this day to work on editing video, I took this day to introduce Kevin and Branic to some of my friends from Phoenix, while [...]
Day 21
Posted on: May 18, 2004We figured we had a 5 hour drive to Williams, Arizona, where the last existing stretch of historic Route 66 is. After spending a few hours there, we would then take the seven hour drive to the Grand Canyon’s northern rim, spend the night there, and take the seven hour drive back to I-40. We [...]
Day 20
Posted on: May 17, 2004Today I had the chance to visit the New Mexico School for the Deaf for the first time. The school is very small, with just over 115 total students from K-12. Its campus, with its size befitting its student body, is designed with the same South-Western architecture as the rest of Santa Fe. We were [...]
Day 19
Posted on: May 16, 2004We stopped for the night in Holbrook and since we did not have any events scheduled for today, we took this time in the beautiful weather to jump in the nice pool and hot tub at the campground. Kevin, Branic, and I swam and played Frisbee for the entire morning before the 1 p.m. check [...]
