What a great career and congrats on your success! I know this job because I too was an Aircraft Maintenance Technician and also deaf! I’d like to share with you a brief story on my endeavor as a life-long personal experience as a mechanic.
I got my A&P licence in 1989 and my first job was at Midway Connection in Springfield, IL after being turned down from my dream job at Northwest Airlines since I was a young and because it was nearby my hometown. I did a wide variety of maintenance on Dornier 228 and EMB-120 aircraft and unfortunately the Company ceased operations after two years due to bankrupty. What I loved most from this job was working on the turboprop engines.
Times were bad during 1992 and I went to college for a BA degree in the Aviation Maintenance Managament. With this degree, I reapplied again at Northwest Airlines and I was finally hired in 1997. But at first, during the hiring process, they witheld my pre-employment because of my deafness since birth which was later recinded. I worked mostly on the sheetmetal structural maintenance and repairs on MD DC-10-30’s and -40’s for 4 1/2 years. Times started changing again and the Company started downsizing and farming out aicrafts. During the last 1 1/2 years before lay off in 2003, I did some maintenance on the DC9’s, 747’s, 757’s, A319, A320.
After a career of 14 years in the Aviation Industry, I decided to change my career into the Food Packaging and Manufacturing Industry. I started out as a Machine Mechanic, Chief Mechanic and now as a Maintenance Reliabilty Technician after 5 years investing my experience.
I do sorely miss working as a Aircraft Maintenace Technician and I hope you do have many more years of success in your career!
This is awesome story. I hope you will be able to stay on until you retire. Just like you, I am sure there are others who want to work with the airline especially as a mechanic. It is a hard work. Keep up with your goals and be succeed. If a hearing person can do it then deaf should be able to do it too. Let the world know you can do this kind of work.
Wowie! It is very impressive story that DeafNation Reporter man interview with you about your job! I’m
very glad that it got people’s attention to see how you can work normal as hearing people. in my deep feeling, You can fly the airplane with new technician special like that… who knows it will happen one day.
I just had my jaw dropped!! I Couldn’t believe that Carlos can drive the 737 craft! I am so impressed with what he be able to do anything on the ground! I have a cousin who is a pilot with American Airlines ( Captain) position and do alot of transatlantic flights..
