The Carolinas are known for racing, Baptism, and above all, barbeque. South Carolina and North Carolina were the last two of 41 states we are visiting on our 92 day road trip, but by no means are they the least. Stopping by in South Carolina for a barbeque picnic hosted by Sprint and the South Carolina Association of the Deaf certainly was the most local thing for us to do, so we went to Lexington to do just that. The [...]
The Youth Leadership Camp has been a staple in developing the Deaf youth of America since 1973. It is a month long session in which campers discover their identity as well as their strengths and weaknesses as individuals. The camp has been in several locations, including Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Oregon, South Dakota, and finally, in Florida. The longest tenure at one campground was in Stayton, Oregon; a campground where both Branic and I attended YLC ourselves as campers in ’96 and [...]
Jed and I awoke unbelievably sore. While my body simply creaked getting out of bed, Jed’s wouldn’t cooperate with him at all for a while before he finally could get up. He looked funny walking around like somebody’s grandpa. We just had a short drive to San Leandro to the DeafHope house where a fundraiser was being held to raise money for the organization. DeafHope was founded eight months ago and bases their offices in the house that Deaf Women [...]
Today is graduation day at CSD Fremont and 47 seniors are graduating and moving on to other things. A total of 40 of them are going on to post-high school education such as college, community college, technical schools, and certification programs. The remaining 7 are joining the work force upon graduation. The graduation speaker was Jack O’Connell, the 20th state superintendent of California. The state superintendent is an eight-year elected position and having him speak at their graduation was a [...]
When Jed said that we were stopping in Visalia, California, Kevin, Branic, and I all thought, “Why?” We had never heard of the town before, much less understand why we were stopping there. We found out that in the tiny town, we were going to meet with Richard Bean, the first and only Deaf volunteer police patrolman in the United States. No sooner than when we parked the RV and stepped outside were we greeted by a strong 6’2″ man [...]
We pulled up to a large, new office building tucked away in the middle of a classy office park in San Diego at 10 a.m. Surrounded by beautiful landscaping, a 20,000 square foot building is the home of DawnSignPress, a publishing company that publishes Deaf related books and DVDs, specializing in educational material. The owner and CEO is none other than Joe Dannis, a Gallaudet University graduate who started DawnSignPress with his then-college roommate, Ben Bahan. When founded in 1979, [...]
Philadelphia is a beautiful city full of history. Anywhere you drive downtown, you are certain to see a blend between modern and colonial buildings that gives you the sense of being in a tech-savvy 1770. Priding itself on its storied past, Philadelphia certainly puts every effort into restoring the houses that line residential streets, landmarks that dot the city, and statues that honor our forefathers. It is only fitting that in a city known for its history, would we see [...]
Today we got up after sleeping in a KOA campground somewhere in Massachusetts with the intentions of going to Martha’s Vineyard and seeing for ourselves where there once was a large signing community. We first had to dump more than a week and a half’s worth of waste which had completely filled our tanks two days ago. We couldn’t use the bathroom or have any fresh water since the tanks were filled and we desperately needed to dump it. It [...]
We arrived once again, at the American School for the Deaf at 8:30 this morning to meet and interview Executive Director Dr. Harvey Corson. Since we were not able to catch him during our tour of the grounds yesterday, we wanted to be sure we had the opportunity to meet with him before leaving Connecticut. During the video interview, Dr. Corson recounted the history of ASD, including the three times it had moved in Hartford before settling on its present [...]
